European and American Musical Instruments
by Anthony Baines

An outstanding encyclopedic photographic (b&w) reference by one of the great organologists. The concise text is highly informative and often includes typical tunings and pitch ranges. Originally published in 1966, it has long been out of print, but used copies in good condition do show up fairly often.

  • Baines' classic illustrated encyclopedia of Western instruments. Profusely illustrated with 830+ b&w photos.
  • Out of print. Used copies may be available.
  • Hardcover: 174 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 1 x 9 x 12

The Oxford Companion to Musical Instruments
by Anthony Baines

A useful encyclopedic dictionary of instruments in alphabetical order. While it includes coverage of ethnic instruments, photos, drawings, musical examples, etc., articles are uneven and more or less Eurocentric. While we recommend this as a good basic reference, it seems overpriced at retail. There are second hand copies usually available.

  • Out of print. Used copies may be available.
  • Hardcover: 404 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.36 x 9.53 x 6.58
  • Publisher: Unknown; ISBN: 0193113341; (October 1992)

Music: Music Eyewitness Book
by Neil Ardley, Dave King (Photographer), Philip Dowell (Photographer)

  • In the spirit of the Dorling Kindersley publications, this is a beautifully illustrated book that is perhaps a bit short on substance. Worth getting for the gorgeous color pictures.
  • Hardcover: 63 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.50 x 11.33 x 8.74
Publisher: Dorling Kindersley; ISBN: 0394822595; (April 1989)

The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments

If you think $1700 is not too much to spend on a musical instrument dictionary, then by all means go for it. The Dictionary is an astounding monument of modern scholarship. Not merely extracted from the larger New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, this dictionary is significantly more comprehensive and in-depth. If you're luck, your local library has this.

  • A definitive guide to the history, construction and performing practice of over 12,000 musical instruments from every culture, past and present. It is the most comprehensive and authoritative study of instruments, and includes over 1,600 illustrations of individual instruments.
  • Hardcover:  3 volumes
  • Publisher: Oxford (1984, out of print); ISBN: 0333378784
